Netfirms to Me. You Thought You Could Cancel Your Service?

I've been using VPSLink since a little after I posted this. Have yet to have a single problem with them

Here's a screenshot of the account page on Netfirms:

Which one do you think will allow you to turn auto-renew off?

Product Renewal? Nope. I can renew it early if I feel so obliged.

Billing Profile? Think again. I can change my credit card, it must be valid, to be able to still renew my account.

User Profile? Haha, no. I can change where I live though.

Upgrade account? Hey, maybe there's a way to downgrade. But no. I can upgrade to my current account plan, somehow.

None of the other things have anything to do with renewing, so let's try the support section.

"turn off auto renew"? Nope. How to do I renew my domain or Plan?

"cancel"? How do I transfer my hosting from my existing Provider to Netfirms?

Damn. I guess I'm going to have to contact them. Oh yeah, they have a horrible form. Oh yeah, they have to make sure you checked the FAQ. Yes, inquiry sent.

Hmm. Since it's almost 2 AM here, and tomorrow is Thanksgiving (though I don't know if there's some sort of Canadian Thanksgiving, but no matter, I'm sure they'll take off tomorrow), and they don't like working of Fridays or weekends, I guess I might hear from them on Monday, which is 2 days before it automatically renews it again. Uggh.

Update: Damn. Got my email much earlier than expected.

We are sorry to hear that you have decided not to continue hosting with Netfirms.
We would like to inform you that we process all cancellations by phone. Simply call our toll free number 1- 866 – 973 – 4664 Monday-Friday between 9:00 am and 9:00 pm Eastern Time, so that we may assist you.

Yeah, that's right. You have to call them. A place that completely relies on web-based service requires you to call them to cancel. What the hell? Guess I'll call them tomorrow (want to download a complete backup before it's canceled) and hopefully it'll be over (no wait, I also have to cancel my other one in a month or so), though I'm not sure if they'll give me my 14 days I still have left on it.

  1. [...] knowledge base does it say how to cancel the account. While doing the digging I stumbled upon some blogs that describe exactly same problems with Netfirms I was facing – poor service, non-existent [...]

I went through the same thing, and was amazed they didn't even make the teensiest bit of effort to keep me as a customer. After all — why in the hell else would they make you call?

Now I'm trying to sort out a mess with my domain name and netfirms — for god only knows what reason, that didn't autorenew.

I had the same problem. It's an old tactic. They hope you A) will not call to cancel, B) will forget to call, C) cannot get through or whatever.

They WILL NOT GIVE YOU A CANCELLATION IN WRITING either.

NEVER NEVER EVER sign up for anything from Netfirms. They suck, they're too expensive, and they trap you.

Just want to add to the list of unhappy NetFirms customers. I regretted signing up with NetFirms all most immediately. NetFirms has horrible customer support in my opinion. I find their practices quite under-handed and deceptive. I wasted my time trying to find a "cancel account" button on their site too. I would not recommend NetFirms to anyone.

Maybe someone will read these post before they choose a web host.

Put me down as another Netfirms customer who couldn't cancel. Also, it takes a good three or four seconds to load my small Drupal blog (no heavy plug-ins, no traffic) and they said that was "acceptable" to them. So basically I'd rather find a host that costs more but isn't a total dick.

I just took over a Netfirms site as the new webmaster. I asked the owner if we could transfer to GoDaddy (who I've had no problems with throughout the past six years… except for their lack of a 1-800 number, but I have Skype, so no problem) and he told me to go ahead. The hosting and domain were both up for renewal on Feb.29/09, so I can't imagine what's going to happen when I attempt to transfer.

I signed into Netfirms (which I'm not familiar with) and I can't figure out how to renew, how to check the size of the space… nothing.

BTW, James – Our (Canadian) Thanksgiving is in October. :-)

Your screen shot looks nothing like my control panel… I only have four options when I login. Strange.
