It's Vista, My Dear

It does have better security, kinda. Like programs, even being run while your logged in as admin, don't have access to other program files and such. It has a special 'Run As Administrator' link now, but UAC is annoying as hell. Got rid of that pretty quickly. All I have to say to it is:
Control Panel > User Accounts And Family Safety > User Accounts > Turn User Account Control On or Off > Uncheck > OK

Aero looks kinda cool, but it's laggy and I ended up getting annoyed with it. It's like Beryl, looks cool, but after probably the third time, it just gets in the way. Going back to the old school Windows look is pretty bad looking. It also disables the fancy switch windows thing for some reason. I'm not sure how translucent title bars make fancy window switching possible, but apparently it does.

The search on the start menu is cool. Probably the best feature of the whole thing, and for some reason my connection is better. Don't know why though, but it doesn't like ICS for some reason. Googling it, it doesn't seem like I'm the only one. It would give a socket error for creating new connections for like 15 minutes every like 6 hours or so. I think disabling ICS fixed it though.

Another annoyance, Windows Media Player doesn't close, it just goes away when you exit it, so shit can start playing, and you don't know what the hell is going on.

XAMPP also seems to have some problems with file access or something. Moving an uploaded file with PHP just doesn't seem to work. Maybe it's a problem with my script, but I can't find it.

Voice recognition is kinda cool in the tutorial, but using it regularly is just piss poor.

Anyway, I'm going to install XP on another partition, maybe Ubuntu, and I'll probably end up switching back to that. My old XP install was getting pretty bad, which is why I kinda tried to switch over to Vista permanently, else the XP install will just be for gaming.

Far too many issues with Vista, IMO to warrant the upgrade pain.

UAC is annoying for people used to running as root. Here's something you might want to consider changing your usual practices: http://theinvisiblethings.blogspot.com/2006/06/introducing-blue-pill.html

    The exploit is out there.

I foresee legal action against MS regarding their heavy handed paternalistic eula. At the very least, they're going to erode more of their user base as they chase more and more people away with their self serving and poorly constructed software.

Really, upgrading wasn't that much of a pain, but I did to a clean install on a new partition. Most things were actually done automatically. I downloaded nVidia's Vista drivers, but the one Windows update downloaded automatically worked better than it. It was mainly VLC having the problem. It wouldn't show the video. I think switching the rendering engine over to DirectX would've fixed that though. It sizes the picture up better using it anyways. That doesn't mean that I recommend you to upgrade it. Stay with XP as long as you can.

That does look like a pretty nasty exploit, but if I ever get a trojan or something like that, which is pretty rare in the first place, I almost always end up doing a reinstall.

Yeah, EULAs are ridiculous anyways, IMO. You're also probably not supposed to use a timer crack to activate it:

I kinda see Vista like Me. Some people got it, others didn't see a point, then 2000 came, and more people started jumping from 98 to it. Then XP came, and it seemed that everyone finally decided to go to that, that were still using 98 or what have you. I remember my high school went from 98 SE to XP (I actually had to help for a few), and that was the same thing I did and was the case for most people I knew.

I see myself bypassing Vista altogether, unless something truly earth shattering comes up…which I don't.

If anything, I see myself moving more towards Linux. Especially if MS decides to force the migration issue by discontinuing XP support. Ubantu? Do you?

Funny story on the guy told to use timerlock. I bet the tech support guy was going on a limb to help him out since he didn't want to tell him in person that he's screwed.

I might go over to Ubuntu, but I'm kinda waiting for Feisty Fawn. Not sure when it comes out, but it should be sometime soon. I did have some problems when I tried to use Dapper Drake, but those have probably been fixed by now.
